When starting a backup / verify / restore operation, I get an error code 53 almost immediately.
Cause
Error 53 means "startup error". Generically, it means that the archive devices couldn't be prepared for access, the archive couldn't be made bootable, the medium to be used wasn't the right one, etc. Normally, this error is accompanied by descriptive text near the end of the summary.
Usually the log file /usr/lib/edge/lists/LogFile will contain additional information.
Solution
The most likely cause of this message is that the archive device did not respond to a call from the BackupEDGE utilities during startup. Check to make sure your archive device is ready and can communicate with the OS. Check the bottom of the summary from the failed operation and look up the specific error message.
